Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Seven

Hello, friends!

So, it’s ah, July.

The end of June completely snuck up on me. This summer is flying by and I’m determined to spend the rest of it at the pool as often as I can, because every time I go, it proves to be one of the most relaxing things. Considering last week, my period really prevented, I’m definitely itching to get back into the routine of running, swimming and cooking before work. This morning’s run was desperately needed and I already feel a lot better. And even though this week is going to be mixed up a little bit, thanks to the 4th of July and then going to an all-day concert the day after, I’m still excited to continue making strides and enjoying each day.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. I didn’t read nearly as much as I wanted to last week (which is surprising, since I started Husberg’s Blood Requiem and that’s been one of my most anticipated reads all year), so I’m ready to rectify that this week.

Last Week’s Goal: Enjoy the break week and get ready to get back to it next week.

Status: Affirmative, Commander. Last week was an impromptu break week, after I had a mixture of food poisoning and starting my period kept me on the couch most of the day Monday and then it rained Tuesday, with me then working 8am-5pm Wednesday through Friday (and I haven’t really figured out how to work out on that schedule, since I work it so rarely). And though I did enjoy the break, by the end of the week, I was itching to run again and start logging food once more (because apparently, I don’t do one without the other).

Weekly Goal: Workout 4x. Log food. Continue finding resources of how to improve mental fitness.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal: Pay bills. Finish changing address for the move and figure out storage unit stuff.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Forgot to put my money in savings again…and still don’t have a storage unit situation figured out, nor have I finished switching over my addresses. But I did pay my bills, which was honestly the most important financial goal for last week.

Weekly Goal: Put money in savings and get back into the habit of checking my budgeting app regularly. Finish up moving prep.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: Start devotional.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Once again, I didn’t do this because I wasn’t ever thinking about it. So, I made the decision to put doing my devotional on my weekly To-Do list. I didn’t do this originally because I figured my relationship with God should be more ingrained, not something I cross off a list. Yet every other important aspect of my life is on that list every week and that is honestly one of the main ways it gets accomplished. So why can’t God be on there, too?

Weekly Goal: Add my devotional onto my To-Do list. Actually start it.

Last Week’s Goal: Enjoy working at orientation and life in general!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Orientation was a lot different than what I was expecting (and I was way more nervous than I realized I would be) but I also really enjoyed working it and kinda wish I could continue doing so. Maybe next summer, I’ll be able to pick up more shifts doing that. But otherwise, it was a good weekend and I’m excited to be a little more productive once more, working nights again.

Weekly Goal: Enjoy seeing family and friends I normally don’t get to see on the 4th! Plus, last Warped Tour and birthday shenanigans celebrating my sister this weekend.

You know, with getting Wednesday off for the 4th, I kinda wish we always only work four days a week, working two days, with one day off, then working two more days, then two days off. It’d be a pretty neat world if that was the normal schedule. I’m abnormally excited for this 4th of July (despite feeling disgusted to be an American with our current political climate) because I get to see some family friends we almost never get to see, plus spending the day with my family, who I also don’t see as often as I’d like. Plus, my man gets to blow up fireworks and watching his eyes light up like a child’s at the prospect is just too adorable not to get excited about.

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Six

Hello, friends!

This post is coming a little late, thanks to having a sick day yesterday where I spent more time moving between the couch and the bathroom than I did doing anything else and all I wanted to do was anything but fight my body with whatever I ate the night before. And although my instinct is to panic, looking at my To-Do list and wanting to cross everything off of it yet it already being Tuesday, I’m forcing myself to step back and take a breath, realizing/remembering that I totally got this.

Status: Affirmative, Commander. Mixed up the workouts a little bit last week (including helping a colleague move on Saturday) and it was nice to mix up the routine a little bit. This week, though, after a lovely case of the food poisoning (I think), stormy weather and a change in the work schedule for just this week, I don’t think I’ll actually be able to workout at all. Not going to beat myself up about it, though. Instead, going to just enjoy the rest.

It’s been pretty nice these past couple days, with the storms bringing in some cooler, eighty degree weather. Of course, it’s all about to change, with the high on Thursday being projected as 102 degrees, but there is something magical about summer, despite this heat and how sweaty I get every time I go outside. Something about summer just releases the happy endorphins and I’m hopeful that continues as we creep into July. Oh, and the highlight last weekend, by far, was catching up with my Mom over lunch and then going swimming for two hours. It makes me wonder why I haven’t made swimming more of a priority over the summer months and I definitely plan to rectify that.

It’s mind blowing to me that June is already halfway done. Honestly, time just flies by too quickly for this kid to truly keep up with it. I’m bummed I haven’t been swimming nearly as much as I wanted to, but I’m really enjoying this summer schedule; kinda wish my hours were always aligned like this!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. And I got a game plan in motion. Taking a break until after Independence Day, then I’ll be editing Artemis one last time before querying it widely. After that, it’ll be first round of edits for Blood Price before sending that to betas and then the first round of edits for Artemis, book two, before finally (hopefully) getting another round of edits done for Blood Price to round out the year.

Last weekend was really awesome: between a needed DnD session that felt too short (but it was cut short because of me, so there is that) and a much needed catch-up session with the bestie, plus another Sporting match with my man, the start of the World Cup and seeing my family (and his) for Father’s Day; yeah, last weekend was really, really lovely! Looking ahead, however, that isn’t a weekend where there isn’t something planned in…a while, it feels like. But I’m excited for whenever that weekend arrives, because I’m either going to not move from my couch or the pool.

I can’t decide what sounds more glorious.

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Four

Hello, friends!

So, this is sort of an odd feeling. Last week, I finished a rough draft of Blood Price (blog post to properly freak about it to come this week), three weeks early from my self-imposed deadline of June 30th. Because of that awesomeness, I’m going to spend the rest of the month relaxing and not doing anything writing related, really. Instead, I’m going to try and catch up on the ARCs I’ve been given and on this blog, which definitely got a little neglected these past few weeks. I’m excited about both of those prospects, but it’ll be weird to not write for a bit, after spending the first six months of the year writing the first drafts of two different books. Then, starting after Independence Day, I’m going to go back to the editing grind, first with Blood Price, so I can send it to beta readers over the holidays and then with my Artemis quintet, with books one and two.

Until then, I have a lot of books to read and a lot of sun to enjoy.

My body is pretty sore and my pace is completely shattered–though my pace still hasn’t regressed back to the point when I first started running, at the end of 2016. Didn’t eat that great over the weekend, but still making forward progress!

I’m still trying to get used to being a sweat bucket, though these summer temperatures (especially when they hit the triple digits, like today) are quickly helping me remember what that’s like, i.e., a lot of tank tops and carrying deodorant in my purse. I’m excited to take a moment to breathe–feels like I’ve been struggling to keep up these past few weeks. So just trying to enjoy the more relaxing atmosphere of the summer, while still staying productive and keeping track of my goals. It’s always a balance, but it’s a good one.

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Three

Hello, friends!

Welcome to June! It’s such a weird feeling that it’s…well, it’s freakin’ June. Sure, I’m sweating enough on a daily basis to where I can totally believe that’s the reality in question, but it’s also very surreal that 2018 is halfway over already, summer has truly hit us and I have only been to the pool once so far this summer.

Oh, the need to re-prioritize.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. So, I didn’t realize how close I truly was to the end of this book until last week, where I had an, “Oh, shit, there are only three major events left before the book ends” moment. At that point, I was at roughly 60,000 words and then started worrying that I wasn’t even going to reach my minimum word count goal of 80K before the book ends. Now, I’m at 72K and still have two of those major events left, so…I’m no longer worrying about the final word count, but instead, panicking that I might actually have a first draft completed of this novel by Friday.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Didn’t get to read nearly as much as I wanted to, last week (sorta thanks to writing more than usual, so I’m not going to beat myself up too much about it). But I’m thinking, after I finish this novel, that I might try and take a reading break for the rest of June and spend most of my free time reading, before I go to work editing the novels I wrote during the first half of this year. So…a lotta more books and reviews are on my horizon, I think.

Aside from Fridays, I’ll now be working 2pm-10pm Monday through Thursday. Tentatively, I think I’ll still go to bed around 10:30/11 each night, once I get home and then try to continue getting up before 8am, so I have plenty of time to: workout, swim/lay out by the pool, shower, get ready and cook before I leave for work at 1:30pm every day. I definitely need to kick my ass back into shape after a pretty consistent month of not doing that, but I also want to enjoy my last summer having a pool at my apartment complex and I have a lot of books that require to be read beside said pool (seriously, it says so on the cover).

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Two

Hello, friends!

If you’re one of the few people who follows this series of blog posts regularly, you’re probably thinking, “Hey. You’re supposed to post these every Sunday. Don’t you realize it’s Tuesday?” Well, real talk here for a second. So, over the summer, I get to work Monday through Friday, instead of working Sunday through Thursday. And I…may or may not write these posts during my down time at work. Pair in Memorial Day Weekend this past weekend and well…that’s why this goal post is getting up a little bit late and the changed schedule is why my Resolution Update series, Quest for Discovery, will most likely be posted on Mondays until August.

Thanks for reading these posts, though, regardless of what day on the week they fall. You have never idea what some interaction with these posts do for my motivation to continue striving to meet these goals!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. The end is in sight! And a lot closer than I realized, too. There isn’t too much left in this book before I’ll be able to write, “The End,” though if I continue to have writing days like today where I’m barely meeting the bare minimum, it’ll be a slow process. I’m hoping to have a day here soon where I just crank it out and fly through these last few chapters. But we’ll see!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Last weekend was truly lovely, between attending a Con with the boyfriend, seeing my family for a cookout and then being completely lazy on Monday, I could use more three day weekends in my life.

This is my last week working 8am-5pm. I’m excited to not have to get up at 6:30am anymore, but I’m going to miss eating dinner fresh and seeing my boyfriend for more than five minutes aside from the weekends. Plus, I feel like I’ve seen my family more in the past three weeks than usual, so I’ll miss that, too. But I’m excited to get back into the routine again, get back into my workout routine, plus start swimming.

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty One

Hello, friends!

Week two of three working 8am-5pm is a go! It’s been a pretty neat change of pace. I definitely feel like my weekends are longer, since I have Friday evenings and then both Saturday and Sunday to do stuff. But getting up early has always been difficult for me and the evenings after work seem to fly by before I have to go to sleep to prepare for actually getting up without feeling tired all day. But I’ve been able to see everyone I care about a lot more than usual, even if that means that working out has taken a bit of a backseat.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Almost to the 60,000 mark, which is pretty dang exciting. I’m closing in on the climax, though we still have a bit to go before that happens. But I’m excited to see where the next couple of writing sessions take me (particularly the fight with the scorpion before she jumps off The Edge).

Status: Affirmative, Commander. I walked during my lunch breaks four times out of five, which was almost three miles each time. Felt really great, right? Well, apparently I didn’t eat nearly as well as I thought I did, because the scale says otherwise. So, back to logging food and adding in some strength training this week, too, on top of my lunch break walks, before I can get back into running in June.

Weekly Goal: Look at budget again and adjust. FRUGAL.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Thanks to some new moving plans, I think I’ll be able to save up a lot in the coming year, which is pretty dang exciting. So I’m going to try and do a pretty good balance of saving money and also getting a couple of things (like updating my wardrobe, perhaps a new laptop, doing the 30,000 mile checkup on my car, finishing my tattoo) that I otherwise couldn’t afford. It’ll be tricky to maintain that balance, but I’m hopeful!

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Though I did think about this a little more, I didn’t pray very much and I haven’t really looked at any devotionals, so I need to rededicate myself to that.

I won’t lie: after getting on the scale last week, I’m a little nervous that I’m going to put back on all the weight that I’ve lost, so I’m definitely staying more cognizant of what I’m eating, when I’m eating and how active I am. I know in my core that I can keep it up and not gain back the weight, but I got a little work ahead of me first. Other than that, though, I’m excited about my writing and I miss blogging, after not blogging at all last week. But I’m also wanting to read more, so I’ve sorta taken a step back on blogging so I have more time to read (plus, I’m beta reading a friend’s novel and I want to make sure and make progress on that every day). So just trying to find a balance between staying on top of things, as well as relaxing thanks to the summer.
