Quest for Discovery: Week Thirty Four

Hello, friends!

It’s sort of a bittersweet day, I think? After today,  I go back to working nights, after working days, i.e., a normal person schedule, for the past month. There are elements I’m really excited about, in returning to my normal schedule, 3pm-12am. A lot of the goals that I haven’t been meeting over the summer, I have a routine in place to do exactly that. So working out should definitely increase, plus my writing output and hopefully my reading, as well! And I’ll have a pretty solid routine that won’t change too much, which is really nice. I miss that consistency. But, I sorta liked working days. I liked how quickly the work day went by. I loved getting to eat dinner fresh and cooking with my man was so, oh so lovely. And getting to see him so consistently and hear about his day was really fantastic, too.

So, in some ways, going back to nights is going to be awesome. In others, it’s going to suck. But hey, you make the best out of it, right?

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: Edit when I can before really getting back into the routine next week.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Well, I seriously slayed this, last week. I edited four times and got through a nice chunk. I’m about to work on the “main” edit for this book this week, which should help guide the remaining edits for the second half of the book. I’m really excited about it!

Weekly Goal: Edit 5x.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: Read every day and write review.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Today, it’s dreary, rainy and basically the perfect day to binge read and finish Soul of the World. If I’m really lucky, I’ll be able to start Shadowblack, too, which I’ve also been pretty stoked to read.

Weekly Goal: Read every day and write review.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Last Week’s Goal: Workout 4x and log food honestly.

Status: Negative, Commander. Definitely got lazy on the working out aspect. But, fresh week, fresh start, so I’m ready to get this back in gear, especially since I’ll be back to my usual routine this week!

Weekly Goal: Workout 4x and log food honestly.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal: Stay frugal.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Spent a little more money than usual, as I needed to get some jeans and went grocery shopping, but I also started paying off my credit card and will be adjusting my budget next week as my boyfriend and I start slipping bills, so I’m doing my best to not stress about money too much!

Weekly Goal: Stay frugal.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: Choose a time, place and stick with it.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Actually do this.

Weekly Goal: Choose a time, place and stick with it.

Carpe Diem
Long-Term Goal: Find a reason to smile every day and something to get excited about weekly.

Last Week’s Goal: Enjoy my last week of summer!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Even despite my boyfriend getting a double ear infection, it was still a lovely last week of summer, getting to spend time with him, sneaking in some time to see my family and basically getting prepared for the semester! But I’m excited for the semester to start!

Weekly Goal: Kill it with goals!

PB4

Although the routine is starting back up this week, of course it won’t be without it’s altercations; like how tomorrow I’m working a longer day to help with first day of classes shenanigans (so I won’t have time to work out) and then this weekend, we’re going out of town for a wedding as a little mini vacation. But, regardless, I’m excited and ready to get back into things.

Hope your week is productive and joyful!

Cheers.

Quest for Discovery: Week Thirty Three

Hello, friends!

Gosh, last week was a whirlwind. It was the dreaded scheduling time (which I honestly don’t mind too much, but it definitely gets exhausting when you spent literally an entire day working on nothing but a semester schedule for your student workers). As such, plus with meetings and the like, I didn’t get to accomplish as much as I wanted to on the personal side, but I still did accomplish more than I thought I was going to, for such a busy time in August, so I’m going to count last week as a win!

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: Edit when I can.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Didn’t get to work on it at all last week. But I did get my short story drafted and written and posted for the Muses. More excitingly, I believe I came up with a small way to fix one of the issues in my Artemis novel I’m currently editing, which has me itching to do exactly that. Though this week is just as busy as the last, I’m hopeful to actually get some editing done!

Weekly Goal: Edit when I can before really getting back into the routine next week.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: Read every day and write review.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. The book I’m reading now is so good. I really should have read yesterday instead of playing ESO all day, so I kind of regret not doing that. But I’m also really excited about this book and hope to sneak in a lot of reading this week!

Weekly Goal: Read every day and write review.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Last Week’s Goal: Workout 3x and log food honestly.

Status: Affirmatve, Commander. Boyfriend wanted to get into the training routine, so we worked out together last week, four times!! I’ve never been the biggest fan of working out with other people, but motivating him and teaching him about an aspect of my life that I’m really passionate about (fitness) was really, really fun and held me accountable in a way I haven’t been in a log time! The weekend derailed us pretty well, but ready to get back on the grind this week!

Weekly Goal: Workout 4x and log food honestly.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal: Stay frugal.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. And put money in savings for this month, to boot!

Weekly Goal: Stay frugal.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: Find a time that actually works.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. I still need to really think about when the best time–and place–is to do this. I was trying to do it during my lunch break at work, but I’ve found that isn’t the most fruitful. So I’m going to take my devotional back home and brainstorm when works the best and try and actually do this.

Weekly Goal: Choose a time, place and stick with it.

Carpe Diem
Long-Term Goal: Find a reason to smile every day and something to get excited about weekly.

Last Week’s Goal: Enjoy cooking dinners and the summer weather for the next two weeks before I go back to working a day job!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Getting to cook dinners and eat them fresh has been so lovely, so really going to try and amp that up this week, as it’s my last “normal” work schedule week until…Christmas. I’ll miss it, but it’s been lovely while it’s been available!

Weekly Goal: Enjoy my last week of summer!

PB4

This past weekend was really lovely. We got to go to a wedding and see some friends I haven’t seen in ages (plus celebrate a truly lovely couple) and then completely vegged out and did nothing yesterday, which…well, I can’t really remember the last time we had a day like that, completely lazy and unapologetic about it. I think it was really needed, because today, I’m itching to be productive and start my week off strong. And, considering I have a one-day weekend this weekend as I go back to nights next week, having a lazy day before the storm of the semester’s start takes hold was a good idea, in my book.

Cheers.

Quest for Discovery: Week Thirty Two

Hello, friends!

Last week was busy enough that, before the week even ended, I was already making my To-Do list for this week–which is no smaller than it was last week. If anything, it’s grown longer. As always, I’ll be trying to balance everything, but most importantly, remember that there is so much more to life than work and crossing items off the To-Do list…even if both of those things feel super gratifying. But I shouldn’t feel guilty for hanging out and gaming with my boyfriend instead of catching up on ARCs. Or spending time getting to know my students instead of responding to emails. It’s a balance I haven’t mastered–not by far–but one I’m always striving to try.

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: Edit two-three chapters this week.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. I mean, I did edit one chapter (and enjoyed the hell out of it as I did) but I kept running out of time every other day, so I only edited once. I’m hopeful that I’ll get to edit a little more here soon, but focusing more on not beating myself up about it, if I don’t.

Weekly Goal: Edit when I can.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: Finish book, write review and stay ahead on August ARCs.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. I have been killing it while reading lately, though, which is really exciting. The books I’ve been reading have been really great, too.

Weekly Goal: Read every day and write review.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Last Week’s Goal: Log food honestly, get back to my lifestyle roots and workout 4x.

Status: Negative, Commander. Didn’t work out at all last week, but the boyfriend got a FitBit and, in teaching him how it works, I’ve been getting back to the roots of why I want to work out, how I want to work out and how to log my food honestly, so I’m hopeful that, in supporting one another, I can get back on track!

Weekly Goal: Workout 3x and log food honestly.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal: Reevaluate new budget and be frugal.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Still need to reevaluate the new budget (which I might not be able to do until September, once we know how much bills are now that we’re splitting everything) so putting that off until next month.

Weekly Goal: Stay frugal.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: 5x.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Like writing, I need to make this more of a priority, so I actually do this daily, instead of just when time presents itself.

Weekly Goal: Find a time that actually works.

Carpe Diem
Long-Term Goal: Find a reason to smile every day and something to get excited about weekly.

Last Week’s Goal: Enjoy the busyness that begins for the entire second half of the year, definitely starting with August!

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Work has been busy lately, but it’s also been really lovely, getting so much done and getting the buzz of a fresh semester starting again.

Weekly Goal: Enjoy cooking dinners and the summer weather for the next two weeks before I go back to working a day job!

PB4

This week, it’ll be busy, with training new hires, finishing up work projects and creating the semester schedule (always my most daunting of projects). But I also have a day off on Wednesday, where I’ll be cutting my hair (and perhaps giving it a new color *waggles eyebrows*) and then going to a Shinedown concert I’ve been looking forward to, so that’ll be a nice break within all the madness. Plus, one of my best friends is getting married this weekend, so I’m pretty excited to celebrate his special day with him. Despite the busyness and the grind, always find the joy in each and every day, and make them count.

Cheers.

Off Again, On Again

Hello, lovelies!

Gosh, it has been a hot minute since I’ve written a post here on this blog. Or at least, it feels like it has. I don’t think it’s been as long in reality as my head believes it has been, but I’ve definitely missed writing personal posts on here. I’ve been amping it up over at my book review blog, Erlebnisse, lately, which has been really awesome. I’ve really enjoyed the posts I’ve written over there and working on that kind of content, but it’s also taken away my time writing here. So I’m hopeful to work out a better balance in the future.

But for now, to the topic at hand, the purpose of this post.

I’ve fallen a little off the bandwagon in terms of my personal goals.

And I…really don’t like it.

Working out has probably been the worst one, for a plethora of reasons. Laziness is definitely one, though I wish that wasn’t the case. Any tips for strengthening that mental game/willpower would definitely be appreciated. My constantly changing work schedule over the summer has definitely impacted it, as well. And I’ve just stopped following the lifestyle changes I learned through the Natural Slim, which I didn’t realize until the other day, when I was able to eat a lot more than I have been, recently, before getting full. Plus, while I usually workout between 4-5x a week, I’ve been averaging one or two days in the summer, if that. As a result, I’m back up to 179, when the lowest I reached was 169, though I was sitting at 170-175 for a while there. So a nice ten pounds added back, which isn’t what I wanted. Granted, I think some of it is muscle, but my self-esteem is slowly creeping back down to depths that I really didn’t want it to return to.

Then, there’s writing–or editing, rather, since my goal for the rest of the year is to edit three books (the first two books in my Artemis series and then BLOOD PRICE). I thought I’d have the first book for Artemis edited by now (it’s mostly line edits at this point, after all) but I’ve been barely managing anything at all recently and that’s been a pretty big bummer. Granted, it has been a bit busier at work and August is our busiest month, so it’s not going to get any easier. But I was hoping to make more progress than this.

Reading, same case. I’d thought I would crank through novels this summer, but it was a lot busier than I thought, so I’ve barely been averaging a book a week (I’d like to read two, at least). And considering I’m also trying to balancing review copies, ARCs and books I just want to unstack from my TBR pile, I’ve actually gotten a little stressed by how little I’ve been reading, since I’m just falling more and more behind on ARCs. Too much time on social media has played into that, but also the fact that I play video games during my down time to relax and I have more of a social life now, thanks to my extroverted boyfriend.

All these aspects are really important to me. But I just haven’t been doing the best job staying on top of things. I know the changes I need to make in order to get where I want to go.

how to train your dragon dreamworks GIF

Now, I just need to make them.

With social media, my plan is to log on once a day, instead of keeping my accounts logged on and open, so I’m always tempted to go back and scroll. Less time on there means more time to read or write. Also, I need to stop with the mindset of, “if it’s only ten minutes, that’s not enough time to read,” waiting instead for an hour or two free to sit down and get cozy with a book. If there is a free moment, there is time to read!

With writing, I think I really just need to accept that this is just a really busy time, right now. I still have five months to work on edits this year and still make my overly yearly goal. That is a lot of time. Plus, I’ve already written two brand new first drafts, so this year is already twice as productive on the writing front–plus six short stories, to boot! That said, if I get everything done during the day that I need to, then I should use the spare time to continue with edits and keep making progress. Because honestly, once we hit September, I’ll be able to level everything out and make consistent progress again, making writing a priority. There’s really no point to freaking out about it now (though I do really miss my stories).

Working out, I need to actually follow everything I’ve learned. Eat when I’m hungry, stop snacking when I’m not or just because it’s muscle memory, i.e., like when playing video games and make my workouts a priority again, instead of just working out when I want to. I also have to remember that the scale isn’t always the best gauge of my health, so just because my weight has gone up, doesn’t mean I’m necessarily worse off. So I weighed again this week and took my measurements. I’ll start weighing regularly again (since I hadn’t been doing that), honestly logging my food and generally just practicing the lifestyle change that helped me lose 30 pounds to begin with. But I also want to continue practicing being more forgiving and working on a healthier mindset when it comes to my appearance and physical fitness. I’m not always going to kill at training and there are going to be days when I go over on calories or just eat poorly. That doesn’t mean all the work I’ve put in for the past two years is suddenly going to get ruined or that I don’t know how to get back on track. I do know these things and I won’t get back to a place where I hate myself. I need to have confidence in that knowledge and practice self love, no matter what my body looks like.

*wipes sweat off brow*

What a return post, huh? Almost a 1,000 words rambling about how, even though my summer has been really great, my goals haven’t been the most consistent that I would have hoped for. But that’s okay, because I know how to get back and continue making progress. I’ll never get to a point where it is impossible to continue, even if I have to make up some ground again, first.

And that is what I need to remember the most.

Cheers.

Quest for Discovery: Week Thirty One

Hello, friends!

Last week was a pretty awesome mini-break. My friend came in town and I hadn’t seen her in years, so it was wonderful to catch up and show her the little special places that make my home…well, home, I guess. And as we come into August, now, it’s going to be a whirlwind of a time. Though I’m excited for everything that’s planned, it’s also going to be busy and I’m already looking forward to September, where hopefully things will calm down a bit. I’ll definitely have to work on being forgiving this month, in terms of goals, but I also don’t want to ignore them completely. It’s all about balancing (but then again, when isn’t it?).

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: No goal for this week.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: No goal for this week.

Weekly Goal: Finish book, write review and stay ahead on August ARCs.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Weekly Goal: Enjoy the busyness that begins for the entire second half of the year, definitely starting with August!

PB4

I’ll be writing a blog post this week, I hope, about trying to refocus on my goals and getting back into the swing of things. It’s not that I did particularly poorly over the summer, but I think I lost a little bit of focus that I wouldn’t mind getting back. Plus, I haven’t been blogging on this blog nearly as much as I want to and I miss that. Hopefully I can sneak in more posts this week and get back to blogging regularly!

Hope you all have a wonderful, productive and amazing first week of August!

Cheers.

Quest for Discovery: Week Thirty

Hello, friends!

As you’ll find out below, my goals have kinda fallen off the wayside for the past couple of weeks. The main reason for that is, honestly, is that I usually complete these goals during my day job, because I’m lucky enough to have a job where I serve people at a library and, if no one is at the desk and all my students have completed their tasks, well, then there isn’t too much for me to do but wait for patrons to need my help. So I fill my time in with blogging, writing, reading and the like.

But work has been ridiculously busy lately, meaning that I haven’t been getting this stuff done.

On one hand, it’s been nice to have some more work related things to do, especially when I covered for my boss for a week. Gave me a sense of…importance I’m not used to feeling. But on the other hand, I miss staying on top of my personal endeavors. I’m bummed that editing hasn’t been going so well and I’m not reading as much as I should be. This blog definitely has been neglected and I miss it. And though it’s only a small part, having my schedule change so often has made it pretty hard to workout consistently (though I really could be working around all of that).

I know this isn’t going to change any time soon. August is always my busiest month for work and when you add on two weddings, house sitting, a concert and a friend coming in town to visit…well, life starts to get really busy and forgiveness becomes really important. It’s a skill I need to work on and I’ll be starting on that this week, because that friend coming in town I mentioned? She arrives this afternoon and I got a couple days to spend catching up with her and showing her my neck of the woods.

So, no goals this week, really, except to enjoy her company after not seeing one another for years and simply remembering to enjoy life. I’ll see you all next week. ❤

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: Edit if I can. But don’t beat myself up if I can’t.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. My usual editing time got swallowed by a lot more day job related activities, but I did show up early to work twice so I could sneak in some editing. Not making a ton of progress on it, but I’m also not going to beat myself up too much. This next month or so is going to be pretty busy, so if I don’t edit as much as I want to, I don’t edit.

Weekly Goal: No goal for this week.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: Read every day. Write review.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. Still didn’t get a lot of reading done, though I did finish a fantastic book last week that was a joy to read and review. Really excited for some books that are upcoming on my TBR.

Weekly Goal: No goal for this week.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Last Week’s Goal: Workout 5x. Log food. Improve mental fitness.

Status: Negative, Commander. I did work out twice, but chose to read one day, pack another day and then had plans the third day that I missed. But hey, such is life, right?

Weekly Goal: No goal for this week.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal:Get back to being frugal.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander.

Weekly Goal: Pay bills for next month.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: Devotional 5x.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Even on the To-Do list, it sorta slipped my mind. But hopefully will get back into it soon.

Weekly Goal: No goal for this week.

Carpe Diem
Long-Term Goal: Find a reason to smile every day and something to get excited about weekly.

Last Week’s Goal: Smile every day.

  • Status: Smile, Commander. Despite still not doing the best with my goals, I did have a pretty good week last week and an even better weekend.

Weekly Goal: The only goal I’m focusing on this week: have a blast with my friend in town!

Quest for Discovery: Week Twenty Nine

Hello, friends!

First off, I have to say thank you to everyone who reached out after last week’s Quest for Discovery post and wished me luck on trying to get back on track, goal wise, wishing me a productive week. That meant more than I think people realize.

Especially as I filled out this week’s reflections and noticed that I did even worse, as far as goals went.

Part of it was due to laziness. Part of it was due to a spike in workload at my day job that I completely and totally didn’t expect. Part of it is also tied into busy weekends and trying to frantically finish packing as I prep to move in with my boyfriend by August 1st. As you can see below, editing was pretty much non-existent, as well as working out and reading–three of the most important things to me. I’m tentatively hopeful that might prove better this week, but with an altered schedule thanks to emergency coverage and a ton of interviews to complete for our student position openings, I may not be productive like I want to be, still.

But that’s okay, because that’s life, friends. And goals will always be there.

PB4Writing
Long-Term Goal: Write two new books and edit two books. Enter the query trenches.

Last Week’s Goal: Edit 5x.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. So, ironic story (I think), but pretty much the entire time I was on a writing break, I had plenty of time to write. The week I decide to start, my “day job” life explodes and I barely got through 20 pages–and those 20 pages weren’t even very focused. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to calm down at all this week, so…

Weekly Goal: Edit if I can. But don’t beat myself up if I can’t.

Reading
Long-Term Goal: Read every day, finishing up some old series and keeping up with new ones.

Last Week’s Goal: Read every day. Write review.

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Thanks to the business of last week, I hardly read at all…again. Which sucks, because now I’m going to be behind on ARCs for July and August…again. Obviously I got some re-balancing to do as I try to figure this out once more.

Weekly Goal: Read every day. Write review.

Fitness
Long-Term Goal: Continue living a healthy lifestyle and shaping a body I love and am proud of.

Last Week’s Goal: Workout 5x. Log food. Improve mental fitness.

Status: Negative, Commander. This was just pure laziness. I did run once and then walk once, thanks to a messed up back, but the next few days, I was just purely lazy and unmotivated. And my body is really feeling it and I don’t like it. I did still continue to log my food, though, however, so I’m pretty stoked about that one.

Weekly Goal: Workout 5x. Log food. Improve mental fitness.

Financial
Long-Term Goal: Learn to have a healthy relationship with money and build my savings.

Weekly Goal:

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. I forgot to put a goal on here again. How do I keep doing that?

Weekly Goal: Get back to being frugal.

Spiritual
Long-Term Goal: Reconnect with God and grow personally to live more like Jesus.

Last Week’s Goal: Just do it.

  • Status: Affirmative, Commander. I FINALLY STARTED IT. And I’m actually really enjoying this devotional so far, though I also feel kinda weird doing it, because I’m not really sure how to “properly” do it? So I’m trying to let that feeling go so I can just focus on trying to reconnect with God.

Weekly Goal: Devotional 5x.

Carpe Diem
Long-Term Goal: Find a reason to smile every day and something to get excited about weekly.

Last Week’s Goal: Stay productive and actually go to the pool this week!

  • Status: Negative, Commander. Monday was definitely productive, but the rest of the week slowly teetered off to not being the most productive…and then I only went to the pool once or twice.

Weekly Goal: Smile every day.

PB4

My To-Do list this week is even bigger than the one last week and I’m starting to get that feeling of anxiety bubbling up in my chest as I start to get stressed out on all the things I haven’t accomplished yet and all the things I’m falling behind on. Yet I’m also just trying to remember to breathe, slow down and focus on completing one thing at a time. I also am going to go on a run when I get home and clear my head, so hopefully, that’ll help. Otherwise, just focusing on smiling every day and enjoying life, no matter how productive I am.

Cheers.
